While our focus is always on imagination and storytelling, it is important to provide a variety of technologies to fit every level and interest. Here is our approach to creative use of video game design, animation, digital video, engineering and robotics, graphic design and digital art, and digital audio technologies made accessible for kids in grades 2-8.
This is your Arts & Crafts gone digital: campers use image editing tools and specialized design software to create a huge variety of props and characters for their stories. They make backgrounds, clothing designs, interior and exterior building designs, they decorate the robots and machines they build, and think up new logos, patterns, and visual accents for their projects.
Visual stories are an important means of communication in today’s world. We give campers the software, equipment and the know-how to come up with organized story ideas, develop them, build their characters and props, and create a mini-production with live video, animation, moving images, audio, and effects. Campers who have never shot a frame of video before work alongside expert returning campers, and every camper leaves with a finished video story they can be proud of.
Sound is a part of every media experience today, almost all of it created or manipulated digitally. In icamp, we provide the tools for creating sampled audio tracks for campers’ final projects using a keyboard controller and specialized software. Whether a camper’s repertoire includes a violin or a kazoo, their final project can sound great! Those who play keyboard or piano will be able to record their own music, but if not, we provide a rich library of samples to modify.
Video and computer games are today’s most interactive media which are now a part of entertainment and education everywhere. Games are used to teach math, train pilots, practice strategy, break through learning disabilities, and create social bonds across continents. But in icamp, campers have a special challenge of making their own games. Campers start by learning step-by-step how to make one of our standard games. As they go through multiple game types, they learn all about sprites, bosses, backgrounds, events, levels, and scores. After following carefully designed lessons, campers can create their own multi-level 2-dimensional games. Experts can go on to scripting and 3-d games.
Every day we encounter feats of engineering, from space stations, bridges, and skyscrapers to windshield wipers in your car and the smart-phone in your pocket. All of these started as an idea and were created using the tools of engineering and technology. In icamp, campers too come up with ideas and make them happen using our huge collection of mechanical, motorized, and programmable components from LEGO(TM) company and a rich library of software tools. Machines, structures, robots, mechanisms, and contraptions become props and characters in campers’ final projects. In the process, campers begin to appreciate the every-day innovations.
